I want to be direct about something else: good governance is not a partisan issue. The principles underlying this legislation — transparency, accountability, the rule of law, and respect for taxpayers' money — should not be Democratic values or Republican values. They should be American democratic values. They are the bedrock promises that every person who takes public office, at every level, implicitly makes to the community they serve. That is what accountability looks like when citizens and their representatives fight for it together.
