POWER OUTAGES AND SNOW PLOWING

Russet's office is a resource for you and your family when the power goes out or there is a winter storm that snows you in. You can find information here about what to and who to contact when the power goes out as well as when you need your street plowed.

BEFORE ANY STORM, IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE:

  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Extra blankets, bedding, sleeping bags, other warm clothing
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • First aid kits
  • Medications
  • Other emergency supplies

other reminders:

  • Make sure your phone, computer and other electronic devices are fully charged
  • If you drive an electric car, utilize charging stations ahead of time

STAYING SAFE ON THE ROADS

avoid unnecessary travel and plan ahead

Here are some tips for staying safe on the roads:

  • Delay all non-essential travel and plan to travel around winter weather.
  • Check weather and road conditions before traveling.
  • Make sure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies.

WINTER DRIVING TIPS

PLOWING THE ROADS

VDOT is responsible for snow removal on all state-maintained roads. While all cities and some towns maintain their roads, VDOT may support cities and towns if requested.

VDOT snow removal priorities are as follows:

  1. Interstate highways
  2. Primary roads (routes number 1-599)
  3. High-volume secondary roads (routes numbered 600 and up)
  4. Residential streets

SNOW CLEARING QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS

If you have questions about your street or other roads in your area, the first step is to determine who maintains those roads.

VDOT is responsible for all state-maintained roads. Typically, towns and cities are responsible for their own road maintenance but VDOT assists all the towns in SD-31 (Western Loudoun and Northern Fauquier) apart from Leesburg and Purcellville. Please note private roads are maintained by the property owner or Homeowner's Association.

For Loudoun residents, you can learn more about road safety and maintenance as well as determine who maintains your road here.

GENERAL TIPS

  • Stay away from and report downed poles or power lines and anything that might be in contact with them. They could be energized and dangerous.
  • If someone in your home requires electricity for a serious medical condition, review your backup plan for an alternate location with power you can rely on during an outage or a generator.
  • Prepare food, water, medications and emergency supplies
